NoiseAir were recently instructed to carry out an air quality assessment in support of a planning application in Erdington, Birmingham. The project involved the change of use of a current commercial building into residential units.
The proposed site is located within an Air Quality Management Area (AQMA) and consequently, Birmingham City Council requested that an air quality assessment was carried out as part of the planning process, to ensure that future occupants at the site are not subjected to poor air quality due to elevated pollutant levels in the area.
Our specialist air quality consultants liaised with the local Environmental Health Department to determine the most recent pollution monitoring data in the area. Dispersion modelling was then carried out to fully quantify pollution levels at the site and identify any potential exposure of future residents to unacceptable concentrations.
The results of the dispersion modelling assessment indicated that predicted pollutant concentrations were below the relevant air quality limits at all locations throughout the development. The assessment results allowed the client to demonstrate to Birmingham City Council that air quality issues should not be considered a constraint to planning consent for the development
