Noise Action Week is an annual opportunity to raise awareness of noise issues and how the impact of noise can affect our daily lives. It can affect us all in different ways from the effects of noisy neighbours to a house or car alarm belting out. By day or night there is no doubt of the massive effect noise can have on our health and well-being.
One in ten of us are kept awake at night caused by noisy neighbours, whether it be loud music or a small party of people chatting in the garden… noise has a big impact and affects us at different levels.
Everyday noise and its effects on the neighbourhood can vary from person to person, what is annoying to you might not be quite so annoying to me… we all have different tolerances.
We can help each other by controlling the noise we make in our neighbourhood. Wherever possible carry out any DIY, gardening or noisy activities to the middle of the day and if you’re going to be excessively noisy then a good idea is to warn your neighbours prior.
Sometimes noise from neighbours can become an on-going problem to you and there are things you can do if this is the case. Firstly, it is always best to try and resolve any issues with your neighbour by talking to them, hopefully reaching an understanding or a compromise.
If you are unable to talk to your neighbour about your concerns then you should contact your local Environmental Health Department’s Noise Team who will advise on the best course of action.
